M.E. Clinical Update Cards

A Small Card. A Big Difference.

For many people living with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (M.E.), medical appointments can be exhausting, overwhelming and, at times, disheartening.

Energy is limited. Cognitive clarity can fluctuate. Light, noise and conversation itself can worsen symptoms. Trying to explain a complex neurological condition — especially post-exertional malaise (PEM), the defining feature of M.E. — within a short consultation can feel impossible.

Too often, patients leave appointments feeling unheard, misunderstood, or advised to increase activity in ways that risk deterioration.

We created these M.E. Clinical Update Cards to change that experience.

When Words Are Hard to Find

This small card allows patients to quietly and confidently say: “Please look at this.”

It directs healthcare professionals to a concise, CPD-certified clinical update grounded in current evidence and NICE guidance.

Instead of patients carrying the burden of education, the card places reliable information directly into clinicians’ hands.

Protecting Against Harm

M.E., fibromyalgia and Long Covid may overlap, but post-exertional malaise (PEM) is what makes M.E. different. When PEM is not recognised, well-intentioned advice can lead to significant worsening of symptoms.

For someone already living within narrow energy limits, that can mean weeks, months — sometimes permanent — loss of function.

These cards are not confrontational.

They are protective.

They are about safety.

The card gives patients:
  • A way to advocate without overexerting themselves
  • A tool that speaks when they cannot
  • A sense of being supported by their community
  • A practical step toward safer care

Sometimes empowerment is not loud. Sometimes it is simply having something steady to place on the desk.

Your Support Makes This Possible

Every pack ordered helps us continue producing practical resources that support safer, evidence-based care and strengthen the case for specialist M.E. services in Northern Ireland.

This is about more than a card. It is about ensuring that when someone with M.E. walks into a consultation, they are not alone.
